This prostrate annual succulent has fleshy, bright green cylindrical leaves that become brown with age.  The water cells on the leaf surface are arranged in longitudinal rows.

It bears white to pale yellow flowers.  The upper parts are sometimes pink.  The flowers are open day and night and emit a scent at dusk.

The dry fruits are red and soft with 5 valves.

This was observed in the wild near Alexander Bay (Northern Cape), testament that it can survive a very harsh environment.
