Podocarpus elongatus

DESCRIPTION

A small evergreen tree or shrub with a grey bark which peels in longitudinal strips. The grey-green leaves are crowded towards the ends of the branchlets. It bears male and female cones, with the female cones red.

NATURAL HABITAT & DISTRIBUTION
Favours sandy soils along rivers and streams in the Western Cape. Sometimes seen on mountainsides.
LANDSCAPING USES
This is a protected tree in South Africa and the smallest yellowwood of the region. It prefers sandy soil.

    Podocarpus elongatus does not have an aggressive root system but bear in mind that it needs space for the roots to grow to stabilize itself. The recommended distance to plant it from any structure is 2m which should avoid any damage as it reaches maturity.
