Vachellia nilotica subsp. kraussiana
DESCRIPTION
Previously know as Acacia nilotica, this is a semi-deciduous tree with a rough and deeply fissured dark grey bark. The leaves are find and hairy. The flowers are yellow balls. The spines are long and paired. The fruit is a warty, scented, dark-grey seed pod that is constricted between the seeds.

I’m not sure whether Vachellia nilotica has a common name in the Xhosa language as it is not naturally found in the Eastern Cape so many traditional people would probably not have seen it to allocate a name to it.
The tree is a fantastic shade tree that attracts pollinators and is a host plant for several butterfly and moth species. Regarding traditional uses, I’m not a specialist on this, so you’d have to research this elsewhere.
